HOW I SEE AN ARBITRATOR

An arbitration is only as good as the arbitrator. This frequently used maxim says a lot about the person to whom the parties entrust the resolution of their dispute.

The person of an arbitrator is a very complex being – s/he is expected to master the laws and procedures of arbitration, to be able to move with ease within different legal systems and cultures and s/he must not be parochial and overly influenced by her/his legal tradition and legal training.

Even if the modern arbitrator is usually a lawyer, albeit with less academic fervour and more practical approach, s/he is mainly a person with deep understanding of current complex business processes. The  modern arbitrator is also a psychologist, a linguist, a project manager with strong time management skills, and much more. Last but not least – it is a person of high moral standards, always independent and impartial.

The most important of all – being a good arbitrator is a never-ending road of study and experience in order to serve best the parties´ interests.
